50 Years After Last Hosting the Event, Italy's Capital Prepares to Welcome Athletes

Dates and Location Set for Prestigious Track and Field Competition

The 2024 European Athletics Championships will take place in Rome, Italy, from June 7 to June 12. The event will be held at the Stadio Olimpico, which last hosted the competition in 1974. The championships will also be held in some of Rome's most iconic streets, making the event a true spectacle for athletes and spectators alike.

The championship will feature approximately 1,500 athletes from 50 countries competing for medals in 47 events across five days of competition. The Championships will serve as a key qualifying event for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, motivating athletes to perform at their best.

In addition to the world-class athletic competition, the event will provide a boost to Rome's tourism industry during the early summer season. The city is known for its rich history, culture, and cuisine, making it an attractive destination for visitors attending the championships.

The last time Rome hosted the European Athletics Championships, Italy's Pietro Mennea won the gold medal in the 200 meters, setting a new world record of 19.72 seconds that stood for nearly 20 years. Other notable winners at the 1974 Championships included Irena Szewinska of Poland, who won three gold medals, and Ulrike Meyfarth of West Germany, who won the high jump at the age of 16.

With a proud history of hosting major sporting events, Rome is well-prepared to welcome the athletes and spectators of the 2024 European Athletics Championships. The competition promises to be a memorable occasion for all involved, cementing Rome's status as a global sporting destination.
